Nutraceutical products are fortified supplements to your diet that encourages health, wellness and the treatment and prevention of disease. These nutritional supplements have specific physiological and nutritional benefits, so your body receives all the necessary nutrients it needs. Dr. Schmidt offers two types of nutraceutical products: BioTE® and Thorne®.

The term “nutraceutical” was coined by Stephen De Felice, founder and chairman of the Foundation for Innovation in Medicine, in 1989. Nutraceutical was defined as a food or parts of food that could provide health benefits. It can also help prevent or treat some diseases.

Many nutraceuticals are used to delay the aging process, prevent chronic disease, increase quality of life or improve health. There are four main categories of nutraceuticals: dietary supplements, functional foods, medical foods and farmaceuticals.

Dietary Supplements

This category contains products which derives their nutrients from food. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates dietary supplement products.

Functional Foods

This category contains whole foods or foods that have been fortified, enriched or enhanced to prevent illness or reduce the risk of disease. Oatmeal is an example of a functional food, as it contains soluble fiber. This fiber can help lower cholesterol. Orange juice fortified with calcium is also a functional food because it encourages bone health.

Medical Foods

Medical foods are often prescribed by a doctor. These foods are created for people with specific dietary restrictions or illnesses, like Crohn’s disease, GERD and ulcerative colitis, to receive the needed nutritional content. It also includes some beverages.

Farmaceuticals

Farmaceuticals are medical compounds made from plants or animals that have been genetically modified to create drugs or antibodies. This is usually done through biotechnology.

Nutraceuticals offer a higher concentration of bioactive chemicals that is often too difficult to achieve from diet alone.
